A former soldier says life as a woman in the world's fourth-largest army was so tough that most soon stopped menstruating. And rape, she says, was a fact of life for many of those she served with. For almost 10 years Lee So Yeon slept on the bottom bunk bed, in a room she shared with more than two dozen women.

Army transgender training materials permit naked men who identify as women to take showers with female soldiers. Because she did not undergo a surgical change, the Soldier still has male genitalia. However, transgender Soldiers are not required or expected to modify or adjust their behavior based on the fact that they do not 'match' other Soldiers. He's a former Army captain and a veteran of the war in Afghanistan. Late last month, Defense Secretary James Mattis delayed allowing transgender people to enlist in the military for six more months.

MCRD San Diego -- When Marine leaders defend the Corps' historic resistance to further gender integration of recruit training, they often bring up infrastructure as a major challenge. The two Marine Corps boot camps, built in the s, are simply not built to accommodate companies integrated by gender. David Berger, commandant of the Marine Corps, even suggested last year that the service would have to close down its existing training bases and build new ones to carry out a congressional integration mandate. But when the Marine Corps changed course and allowed an integrated recruit company to train at its previously all-male San Diego boot camp earlier this year, preparation -- at least when it came to living quarters -- was surprisingly simple. The female recruits, who all belonged to Lima Company's Platoon , were housed in a ground-floor segment of a male barracks building. The shoulder-level windows that lined the external walls of the barracks were covered with a frosted coating that offered a level of privacy that the other barracks floors lacked.
The U. Army is instructing its female soldiers to "accept" having men in their showers and changing areas who are "transitioning" but still have their male genitalia, according to training documents that have been released. As previously reported, Defense Secretary James Mattis announced last week that a July 1 Obama-era deadline for the branches of the armed services to begin allowing openly transgender individuals to enlist had been delayed an additional six months. However, the move by Mattis, which came at the request of military leaders, doesn't completely halt the transgender military policy enacted by former Obama Defense Secretary Ash Carter last June. As the Pentagon began allowing transgender service members to openly identify as such and make changes to their military identification last October, other service members have been forced to undergo mandatory training on the policy changes. Navy announced last year that it would force its sailors to go through mandatory training on the new transgender policy. And last month, it was reported that the Army is also conducting compulsory training on the matter. On Wednesday, James Hasson, a former Army captain, a veteran of the war in Afghanistan and law student at University of Virginia, wrote in a piece published by The Federalist that he has obtained a "Tier Three Transgender Training" PowerPoint and accompanying lesson plan being used by the Army in mandatory transgender training sessions. The policy prioritizes subjective feelings over combat-readiness and inverts military order by placing the needs of individuals over the well-being of their units. The new policy allows for transgender service members to switch their gender marker in DEERS — the Army's personnel database — without having to undergo sex reassignment surgery.
